Pure in Heart?
Pure in Heart?
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
Matthew 5:8
There are those who would say that God’s Word has contradictions in it. In a sense there is some truth to that. My Bible says that my heart is deceitful. My heart is desperately wicked. My heart needs guarded as that all of my issues poor out of it. My mouth will let people know what is in my heart. So, when Christ says to this multitude “blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” what does that mean? He is the only one Pure in heart and He is God...is He looking in a mirror?
There has to be something to this when talking of my heart and of yours, right? Is a pure heart something we are able to obtain? Is it something we strive for? Is it about who we are or what we do? I know my heart and the answer to all of these is not a chance. On my best days when I strive to serve God with all my heart there is still so much impurity that can creep into my thoughts, anger and malice at the slightest thing someone might say or do, or some flesh full desire wanting to be fulfilled. How can I be pure of heart?
Here is the contradiction if you want to call it that. Grace. Grace is God’s strength when I am weak. Grace is God’s Working in my broken shattered life. Grace is bigger and better than the law. The law is that I am sin. Grace is that Christ is more. The law is that I am unclean and the opposite of pure. Grace is Christ’s purity in me. These beatitudes are sequential! I am poor in spirit, so I need Grace. I mourn my sinful self, Grace removes the condemnation. I know how broken I am and seek to serve others in meekness because what Grace can do. If I hunger for all Christ is, He fills me with Grace. Because of my great need for mercy, Grace helps me show mercy. Being pure in heart is about being filled with Christ and allowing Him to show who He is in my life.
