Not My Feet
Not My Feet
“If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.”
John 13:14
Hey, let me ask you something...have you ever let someone wash your feet? I certainly haven’t...for a couple reasons. One, I don’t want to hurt someone. I know what you’re thinking, “Larry, why would you hurt them?”, which brings me to two, my feet are stupid ticklish! So, if someone was to wash my feet, more likely than not, they would be mule kicked by yours truly.
Did you know God washed some dirty feet of some regular dudes. Yep, Jesus, who IS God, was about to be betrayed by Judas, denied by His friend Peter, and forsaken by his closest friends except the apostle John. So, Jesus knowing everything that was about to happen decided to get them all together and let them know exactly how He felt about them. Now if this was me, and more than likely if it was you, we would sit down to supper and let them all know that we knew what they were all gonna do and then tell them to get out, no supper for you...well except John...we’d have a nice time.
That is not at all what Jesus did. He ate with them all, then after supper, He got a basin of water and went and washed their feet. He showed them exactly how He felt about them, knowing their humanity, He showed them that He was there to help them. Back then, feet were very dirty as that they all wore open shoes and walked on dusty paths and roads...and Jesus, God the Son, washed them clean!
Then He told them, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.” Now I know we can take the Bible very literally many times but there are times we have to really look at the why of the action, more than the action. Today, most of us have showers and baths, shoes and socks, and don’t make a habit of letting our feet get filthy. So, are we supposed to wash each other’s feet? If we don’t does that make us bad Christians? Like I said, we have to look at the why of the action more than the action.
We are not supposed to allow the dirty in someone’s life to keep us from serving them. Sometimes God will want to use us to help someone get the filth out of their lives...not in a sense that we clean them from sin...we couldn’t if we tried. No, what I mean is we have to let them see that our feet have been dirty too, but we know the One that washes away all the dirt! So we help them to see Jesus and His cleansing power!
Do you know why most of us won’t let God use us in this way? We want to keep our shoes and socks on so no one ever knows what our feet look like. Not my feet! We can’t let them know that we’re a mess too, and that Jesus has to clean our feet every day. Let that simmer for a bit.
