What I Think?
What I Think?
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Philippians 4:8
Do you want to take a test with me? I call this the filth-o-meter of the mind test. All you do is sit down, open your Bible, or kneel in prayer and in a short time something will come into your thoughts that will totally distract you from what you’re trying to do. Now I imagine there are some who will say, “well I didn’t think anything sexual or filthy”...no, but I bet there was some bitterness or anger or malice towards someone. Or maybe you thought about how much someone else needed what you were reading...guess what, that’s just as filthy thinking as any thing else. Let me be plain, anything that we think that isn’t on this list in Philippians 4:8 which is, things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, virtuous things that give godly testimonies and bring God praise, well then it is more than likely filthy. God’s Grace has a funny way of really bringing the spiritual hammer down on who I am. He does this on purpose, because who I am is not about what I think I am, but about being like The I AM. Jesus didn’t struggle with sexual thoughts or bitterness towards His enemies. He never judged one person who wasn’t lining up with what He thought...He even told people that thought He was judging them, “I didn’t come to judge the world, but to save it.
I used to really struggle with this filth-o-meter test...sometimes I still do. I mean God told me what things to think on in Philippians but that doesn’t mean that I always do. I have found out that God’s Word is so true! When it says, “as a man thinks in his heart, that’s who He is”, (I larryphrase) it is not joking. I also found out that whatever I put into my life, is always going to be there. There is no garbage disposal for the brain. The things I don’t want to think on will always be in the “cache” of the mind so to speak. So, when I want to focus on Who God is, it’s like my flesh brings up all the stuff I want to remain in the “trash bin”. It can be very discouraging. Well, One day I was reading in Proverbs and it said this, “commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established”! What!? That is awesome...so I am not able to empty the trash in my mind, but I can compact it! How, well by serving God with my life! So, if I am going to get what I think focused on God, then what I do has to be focused on God...can I tell you, it works! Don’t take my word for it...Take God’s Word, He said it!
