Just A Little
Just A Little
“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.”
Luke 17:5-6
Let’s Talk About Faith! Faith is our confidence in something that isn’t physically tangible. Spiritually speaking, faith is our confidence in Who God is, what He is doing, and that He will keep on being all that His Word says. Faith in God comes from God since His Word says, “faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God”. God doesn’t heap a mountain of faith on someone so they will use it all to believe and follow Him. He gives us just a little faith. Have you ever wondered why God doesn’t just sit up in the sky and make Himself visible to all so that all will believe who He is? Would that be faith though?
Jesus’ disciples came to Him one time and said, “Lord, increase our faith?”. What an odd question...I mean God in the flesh was walking with them...talking with them...they literally asked HIM the question! Jesus’ response was perfect! He said, “you only need faith this big, if you have faith this big, nothing is impossible for you!” Wow! What a wonderfully confusing thing to say Jesus!
He goes on and gives them an example. So, this guys live in employees got back from working all day in the field and Jesus gave them two options of how the Boss might handle supper time. He said, “If your employee came in from work, would you tell them to sit and eat, or would you tell them to get cleaned up and serve you first, then they could eat?” Of course our human nature which is not unlike the disciples being asked the question would be, “serve me first, then eat”. Then Jesus says, “would you thank the employee for serving you first? I doubt it! So, this is how to exercise the just a little faith you need. Don’t worry about when you’re gonna work, when you’re gonna eat, when you’re gonna serve, and don’t do it for applause or appreciation. Serve me until I’m done, no matter what, knowing you will be taken care of since I am promising, knowing that you are just a servant.”
This literally grates against all that we are! We don’t want to be a servant. We don’t want to wait to get what we feel is owed us. We don’t count ourselves unworthy of anything. But faith, just a little of real faith in Christ, will tell me to humbly serve Jesus now, tomorrow, and the next day, no matter how hungry, hurt, or horrified I get knowing that how I feel now will not matter when I finally sit at God’s Table in Glory and start His Eternity! Let that simmer for a bit!
