The Good Gift
The Good Gift
”Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.“
James 1:17
Most people in their normal mindset would say that they like good things. Now what seems good to some may not to others as what is called good can be subjective. However, in God’s Word good is a word that derives from the word god. If I say “God is Good”, not too many would argue with that phrase. If we take personal subjectivity out of the word good and allow it to be a biblical word then it has to be in the same vocabulary as God. God is Good, that is a fact of life. In James the Bible says that “every good gift and perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights”. This comes on the heals of making sure we know what is not good. Biblically speaking I am not good...you are not good...we are not good. We are sinners. Sinners who sin. We are tempted but the things we consider to be good, but anything that draws our attention and efforts away from the Savior is going to take us to a place of sin and therefore it cannot be good. What is good is a God who does miraculous things to get our attention in the midst of us trying to have what we want in our lives. Things that He knows will bring us to a destructive end. It is His Goodness that convicts us of that sin and draws us back to Him. You see, in our subjectivity conviction would not be a “good” or “perfect” thing, but it is! It is that conviction that reminds us that it is the goodness of God that leads us to repent! Then it is in our coming back to Him that we see what is truly the good and perfect Gift that is Christ! Let that simmer for a bit.
