My Easy Task
My Easy Task
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
Ah, the all illusive rest. This isn’t about a good night’s sleep, an afternoon nap in the recliner, or a vacation spent sitting on the beach. Jesus is speaking of all those that He had shown His miraculous power too in several cities. He was casting out demons, making blind eyes see and lame legs leap! He was healing the leper and speaking life into the dead. He was giving great signs and wonders to people who needed to see that He was the only Way to know God. Yet the greater majority of those He was ministering to never really repented of their sins and followed Him. They were still doing all the works of salvation and sanctification on their own.
Let me get one thing set straight and set aside, Heaven will be a place of eternal rest, but this is not the rest Christ is promising. No, while that rest is eminent, it is not the rest He is promising, well at least not the only rest. You see, we still have a tendency to take Christ as the Miraculous Savior of the Sin Penalty placed on our lives, yet never turn to Him to really repent of who we continue to be. We try so hard to be a “good christian” by doing all the things the pastor, or mom and dad, or the Sunday school teach taught us. We give our money, because it’s right. We go to church, because it’s right. We invited others because it’s right. We dress a particular way because it’s right. We say the right things while not saying the wrong things, because it right. We need to wake up! We need to be honest with ourselves and say, “This is so exhausting!”.
Christ’s promise of rest isn’t about our relaxing from doing all those things that are right...they’re right, but doing them doesn’t make us right, Jesus does. There is just something freeing and liberating when we literally “take His yoke”! That means we partner with Jesus! Did you know that when two animals are yoked together, one of them is the “lead” and does the most of the work, but both get to see the seed planted and the crops come in. When we yoke up with Jesus, He is the one that does the work and we get the reward.
This may sound crazy to you, but you will never understand how it works in this life. You may never make full sense of how life will manage if you give Christ control, but He promises this, if we do, we WILL know rest. We have one simple task...just one. Go to Jesus! When? Now...why? Because you are wearing yourself out and accomplishing nothing. How? By stopping, realizing you’re wasting your time, and turning to Him. Christ told us that without Him we can do nothing, which has to mean with Him, He can do anything! So, what are you waiting for?
