Walk Much?
Walk Much?
“Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.”
John 5:14
Many of us take the simple ability to walk for granted. There are those who would do anything to be able to literally stand on their own two feet and use them to get around. This particular gentleman was doing all he could do to walk...he never had walked before yet it was a great desire. Along comes Jesus! Jesus healed this once lame man and he could now do what He had always dreamed to do. He had no idea who Jesus was, yet, but he knew that only Jesus made him to walk. Then we get to our verse here. Some religious people wanted to know why this man could walk and why he thought it was ok to go against how they thought he should walk. The former lame man didn’t know how to answer them, except he figured since they never did help him to walk, he was going to just do it the way the One who healed him said. So now Jesus tells him there is only one way for him to walk and that was in obedience.
Christ told this man to go and sin no more because there was something worse than not being able to physically walk. What could that be? What would be worse to this 38 year old new walker not being able to physically walk? Well, let’s look at what Jesus said. He said, “I made you to walk, right? So, don’t sin any more...”. Was this man now going to live a sinless life? Was Jesus going to make him lame again if he messed up? That sounds messed up! What if Jesus simply meant for this man to walk with Jesus in a spiritual sense. To obey God’s Word in his life. Did you know that when we walk in sin we cannot walk with Christ? We make ourselves spiritually lame and the more we wallow around trying to figure out how to walk without Christ the more desperate we get. We look for anyone to help us but Christ. The worse thing that can happen to one who has been healed and is able to walk spiritually with Christ is that they choose to not to. When we do this we will remain lame for as long as we choose to.
Do you know that if that lame man hadn’t obeyed the Word of God he would never have walked? Do you know that if you don’t obey the Word of God you won’t walk much either?
