You Never Know
You Never Know
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Romans 8:26
I feel like I almost always know what I need to ask God for. I have a list each day that I pray for and sometimes that list changes while other parts are the same each day. Here is the simple truth though...those are never about me. They are not about my infirmities or what I am personally going through, but that is not to say that many of the requests I do pray for are not close nor dear to me. The truth is that most of those things are supplications for people and things I care for. I honestly feel like I don’t have the right to ask for things for myself because they are not always something I can say I would honor Christ with so I don’t want to “ask amiss”. If we are to get really honest, many times I can convince myself that I am not supposed to pray things for me unless the request is about my service to God.
What about the storm in my life? Am I not to go and ask my Jesus to calm the storm? To which I would reply, didn’t Jesus rebuke the disciples for their lack of faith after He rebuked the wind? I have heard several times over the years that there is a “tongue” of angles that we can pray in the spirit, but my cynicism won’t allow me to speak to angels because I believe that I have direct access to God and am in need of no mediation. Now, to my point...I am allowed to ask God for things that I, Larry Hof am in need of, but to really get down to it...I really don’t know what I need. I don’t know what will I should ask for to make me a better husband and father. I don’t know what I need to ask for to be a better pastor and friend. I don’t know what I need to ask for to help others see Jesus in me. What I do know is that when I get myself to a place where I don’t know, God does, and that is really all that I need.
