Loving When You Cannot
Loving When You Cannot
“But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.”
Luke 6:27-28
Jesus really does make things harder in my life when He speaks. This is straight out of His own mouth as he spoke to thousands in the Sermon on the mount. He is speaking at great length to people about how things ought to be. Jesus knew that from the beginning He had created man to love. He knew that we were created in His image and knew that if we would be in His image again that we could do the things that He does. Jesus lived a life of servitude for all, even those who hated Him. Jesus gave His life for all people’s sins, even those who hate Him. Jesus rose from the grave to intercede for all that follow Him, even those that struggle to follow Him.
Loving when you cannot is simple, really. It is simple in the fact that I am unable to love those that do not love me...honestly even those that love me can be difficult to love back sometimes. Have you ever thought about why? Why it is so hard to love when you don’t. That is simple to answer too; it is because we are sinful. Sinful means “full of sin”. You might be like, “whoa, wait a minute Larry, I am not full of sin! I try very hard to keep myself from sin”. Well that is great, except this, when we don’t love like Jesus describes here, we are full of sin...
Here is how you love when you cannot. Stop, and in a prayerful manner, breath out all that is you, and breath in all that is Christ. Die to who you are and allow the Spirit of Christ to love through you. Loving when you cannot is simply allow Christ to love in and through you, because while I cannot, I can do all things through Christ Jesus...look at that passage, it’s about giving of yourself, and after all, isn’t that what love is?
