Motives Matter
Motives Matter
“But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”
Acts 20:24
Have you ever sat and thought, “what motivates me”? I mean really think about why you do what you are doing whether right or wrong. I was at the church using the weed eater one day, which is one of my least favorite things to do, and the Holy Spirit stopped me and made me ask myself, “why am I doing this?”. I really didn’t have a good answer. I wasn’t doing anything wrong and the way I was doing it wasn’t wrong. The why was. I was doing what had to be done. I was being paid to do it, so to speak. No one else was going to do it. These were a few of the answers that I responded with, yet there was no joy. There was no ministry. There was no Jesus. I mean He is ever present with me but I wasn’t present with Him. I decided that day that if I was going to do something, my motivation had to be different. Motives Matter.
Did you know you can do everything you do now, even the things you get paid to do, for the glory of God. If someone is reading this and you have a vocation that pours evil into your life and others, disregard my previous statement, repent and let God give you a job you can use to His glory...back to my point. We can do everything for God’s Glory, all it takes is a shift in our motives. You don’t have to be in full time ministry to be a full time minister for Christ. He has called some of you to show Jesus to those you work for and with. Do you want to know how to shift your motives? It’s easy!
1. You don’t matter, Jesus does. Your employer, your colleagues, your customers all need to see that they are more important to you than you are. That’s how we show the love of Christ. No matter how they treat you, no matter what they say, no matter what is done, respond with Christ...its a “turn the other cheek” mindset. Remember that He has you exactly where you are for such a time as this.
2. Don’t stop. Don’t react with your feelings. Take a breath and remind yourself that Jesus is everything as you love Him with all you say and do.
Our Motives Matter. Everything we do will either be perishable wood, hay and stubble; or gold, silver, and precious stones which will last forever. So, what motivates you? Why do you do what you do? Remember Christ is ever present with you, but are you in the present with Him?
